About

How did this project start?

This project started when I noticed how expensive programs for students were. I thought about the kids who may not have those opportunities. I looked into it more and realized that tutoring and basic school supplies may not apply to everyone who needs it. I believe it is important for every student to gain knowledge and not be left behind. I want to take a new perspective on how we learn and teach as a community. I think it is important to include creativity in learning. This is because all students are born with unimaginable capacities. It's just a matter of them growing into it. As a student who struggles in math, I know how hard it can be to keep up. That's why I want to make a change and use my knowledge from my perspective to help other students who may be in need. I think is important to teach students in different ways that may help them in the long run.

What can the volunteers do?

Volunteers will be attending to the children by helping them with what they are struggling with. All students will be between the ages of 1st through 5th grade. Meaning that volunteers between the ages of 6th grade through high school, will be assigned to each child and be a personal tutor. For the first session, we hope to be able to discover the student's struggles and come up with a plan to help and solve it. The first session is important because it helps set a basis for a child's needs. We want to get feedback from teachers and parents, so we can improve what we are doing. Middle school and High school students who volunteer will be receiving volunteer hours. This can benefit futures by setting high school and middle school students down the right path. Doing volunteer work is also greatly recognized by colleges and future jobs. It helps form a well-rounded person.

What will students be doing?

Students will also be attending the sessions and be receiving the help they need from the volunteers. Students will receive basic supplies to do their work with. The supplies will come in a tote bag so it is portable. The circulars we are helping students with are Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. Depending on what a child is working on in school, we will make sure to find the right support. We will be meeting with a group starting with 5 students a time. Schedualed sessions may vary depending on parents situations. We want these lessons to be fun for students. We don't want kids coming home and feeling stressed. Using teen volunteers help set a relaxed environment while still helping students improve. We want to use creativity skills like hands on learning and technology to make it fun.

Basic supplies

Basic supplies include an eight pack of markers, a twelve pack of colored pencils, a twenty-four pack of crayons, one eraser, two pencils, one art box, one notebook, one folder, one pair of scissors, one whiteboard, one whiteboard marker, one highlighter, one school glue, and one nylon bag with our logo on it. Some supplies may vary, depending on its availableness and other factors. If a child needs extra supplies, we will be happy to provide it depending on what circumstances it's under.

What areas we are helping

We are starting in and around Des Plaines in local women's and children's shelters around the area. We hope to spread into Chicago and the rest of Illinois too. In the future, we hope to help shelters like WINGS program. This is a local women's and children's shelter near Mt. Prospect. We may also talk to schools around the area to see if there are any students there who need help.
